Course Summary

We have used quite a few programs this semester. We met for each class in Second Life, where we either had a lecture or were told what the day's assignments would be. One other virtual world we used was Wonderland, which was a little bit too buggy for my liking. The most fun had to be using World of Warcraft because it ran smoothly and also was just fun to play.

Sketchup was the hardest part of the class because I am not very talented when it comes to visual arts. Creating content in Second Life was easier for me. The FaceGen tool was fun to play around with because of all the options it gave for adding details to a 3D face. BS Contact was interesting as well, but felt limited compared to FaceGen.

A couple other games we used for this class were Runescape and America's Army. I appreciated what they tried to do but I thought that both concepts were dated compared to newer games on the market. The look and feel of both games felt quite old.

This was an Immersive Education class at Boston College.

Second Life Santa

Here is the same Santa but created in Second Life this time.

The body.

Some legs and some color.

Here I added some arms. The sandbox I was in also started causing me some grief at this point. It said that it would erase content after 3 hours but after about 10 minutes my creations started disappearing. They went into my inventory and all I had to do was drag the item back out into the sandbox. Positioning it again cost me a lot of time.

And the finishing touches.

3D Santa

Merry Christmas! Here is a 3D Santa that is supposed to look like this. Enjoy!

I started with a big oval for Santa's body.

Some arms.

Cylinders for legs and a scaled down sphere for feet.

I drew the hand and pushed it out, then rotated it and moved it onto the arm.

A hat to keep Santa's head warm.

And a little detail on his body.

America's Army

Here are some screens of myself playing the basic training mode in America's Army 3. I think my PC is too old to play it because the graphics were quite weird (all characters show up in a black silhouette). The game was just about unplayable from the lag because I haven't upgraded my PC in maybe 6 years!

Here I am finishing the first obstacle course.

Check out those stats!

Basic rifle training.

Shooting targets.

FaceGen Modeling

I started out by making a randomly generated face. Looks normal enough...

I used the sliders to make him look more masculine, older, and more monstrous.

The shape options give a really broad range of tools to customize the shape of the face.

The morph options were the most fun to play around with.

Is that Sloth from The Goonies?

And this is why you shouldn't click randomly on the screen!

VRML Assignment

For this assignment, I simply took the .jpg files associated with the .wrl file and edited them in paint. After drawing my goatee and sunglasses, I saved all the files and opened the .wrl file. This is the result:

Lion Part 2 (with help this time!)

I am attempting to make another lion in Sketchup. This time, Isaac is giving me some pointers. Thanks Isaac!

Here is the lion I need to recreate:

We met in Second Life where he gave me some tips about making a better looking lion than my previous effort.

Here we go! Let's start with some simple shapes.

Connecting those shapes!

Starting to look like a lion in my opinion.

Getting more tips from Isaac. It doesn't show in this picture, but lots of Second Life people were making fun of my weight problem. I tried to ignore them but it still hurt my feelings.

Coming along rather nicely!

Adding some color.

And here we have it: a finished lion in Sketchup!

Sketchup Lion

Here is a lion I made in Sketchup. Rawr!

Let's start with a body.

A leg and a paw.

I copied and pasted that leg and paw so I had four of them.

I added a head and some eyes to my lion.

A killer tail!

Whiskers and a mane!

Space Man Part 2 (With Google Earth!)

This is my second attempt to make an astronaut in Google Sketchup. This time I put a little more time and effort into it.

One thing that I need to mention is that I could not get my model into Wonderland. I exported my space man as a 3D model in Sketchup and tried numerous times to import him into Wonderland. Wonderland was lagging very badly and I could barely move, much less put a 3D astronaut into the world.

Here are the results!

I started with a block for the body.

Some legs to walk with.

Feet!

I originally wanted two spheres to get the black screen on the front of the helmet.

That didn't work out too well.

Here he is! You can tell he's an astronaut because it says "NASA" on the front of his space suit.

And here he is in Google Earth.
